Do Pessimists Really Die Two Years Earlier Than Optimists? Scientists already know the truth
04 Jun 2024Have you ever considered that your attitude toward a half-empty glass could shorten your life? It really does, as a new study from the QIMR Berghofer Genetic Epidemiology Group in Australia has found that pessimists can have a whole lot of health problems - and we can't procrastinate on the details any longer!
Researchers analyzed data from over three thousand volunteers aged 50 and up, who filled out questionnaires between 1993 and 1995. These questionnaires ask them to spill the beans on their outlooks and feelings.
The results? Turns out, having a negative outlook might be bad for more than just your mood. The study showed that those with a pessimistic mindset were more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases and other health issues over the next 25 years. Yikes!
Here’s the kicker: the most pessimistic participants ended up dying an average of two years earlier than the optimistic ones. Talk about a buzzkill! It seems that a negative mindset doesn't just make you grumpy—it might actually cut years off your life.
But why does this happen? The researchers have a theory. They suggest that pessimistic older folks might be more aware of their health problems but feel like there's no point in trying to fix them. So, they skip following the doctor's advice, ditch healthy diets, and avoid exercise. Basically, they give up on taking care of themselves, which can lead to serious health problems.
So next time you find yourself grumbling about the world, remember: a little positivity could longer your life!
